Bad Genius (Thailand Movie - 2017)

 Assalamualaikum wrt wbt.

I'm thinking of changing even my pen name to Chu Mim, but it would be not too secretive. Lol. So, I'm staying with Amienieya Yusof.

So, today I'm going to give a review of my all-time favorite Thailand Movie - Bad Genius.

This movie was out in 2017 and the reason why I started with this is because:

1) I just finished watching Projek Anchor SPM (2021)
2) My final students just got their SPM results a few weeks ago.

Anyways, my list will include a lot of school themed movie/drama, so please bear with me alright? Hehehe.

I watched this drama in 2017 in cinema, I think alone. I'm a fan of going to cinema by myself. I watched a lot of movie alone because my taste of drama usually different that most of my friends.

Anyways! I don't know any of Thailand actors and actress, so let's just go straight to the story.

Bad Genius started when Lynn, the genius one in this story transfer to a prestigious school with full scholarship. Her father is a teacher, and she's a pure genius. She always score A on every subject and got 4.0 flat in every subject. Her name in the student list was near to Grace and she befriended her. Grace was academically-challenged, I would say, she's an average student.

So, they were always together in school since they were in the same class, and while revising for Maths, Grace told Lynn that is she didn't score 3.5 and above, she won't be allowed to performed in the school festival or something like that. How old are they again? because they just learn topic Sets, something we have to master in Form 2. Hahaha. So Lynn decided to be her tutor.

Then, on their examination day, Lynn realized that the question is exactly the same as the revision question they did, but when she turn to Grace, good lord, she shook her head, saying she had no idea. I'm like, really Grace? Did you really hate Maths or something??

Therefore, Lynn did something very cunning, she wrote her answer on her eraser and put it inside her shoes before kicking it to Grace who received it precisely. She took the eraser and shoot back the shoes, but of course, it ended up astray. She was not only bad in Maths, she was also bad in doing normal things. I supposed she's clumsy. Lol.

Anyways, the exam was done and Grace scored 3.5 above and Lynn got straight As. Grace get to perform at the festival and their lives goes on. That is until Grace invited Lynn to her boyfriend's house. Pat is a son of a rich person, but he's stupid. Lol. His family paid a lot so that he could stay in the school even with his weak academic. As he's Grace's boyfriend, he naturally knew what the two was up to, so he proposed that Lynn help him, and he'll pay her. That's when things turned around.

On the other hand, there's Bank, another top student who's also under scholarship as well but dislike such dishonesty. While Lynn get a bigger base of clients and taught them piano-styled code, the exam day arrived. The problem was, there was two sets of papers. After confirming who got a different sets from her, Lynn finished her question in a hurry before exchanging the question paper with one of the client who get a different set.

She managed to finished everything on time, even give her clients all the answers, but at the costs of her scholarship. It turns out that the teachers found the solving problem of a different set on her scribble paper, and Bank actually tip them off about the cheating that was happening in the exam hall. As a result, her scholar was revoked.

Of course it won't end there, or else, there's no point of this story, right? As I told you before, Pat's family was super rich, so of course they're sending their kid to a prestigious university. For that, he need to sit for STIC. (I have no idea what STIC is, but it is like A-Level, a standardized test for university application all around the world). Pat's parents agreed that Grace had influenced Pat a lot that he scored better in his exams (he cheats!), so they asked her to go with him, and they will took care of all the expenses.

So Grace met up with Lynn and passed her how to score STIC book. (Really, now Grace?) Lynn didn't agree at first since she couldn't do it alone and she's been revoked from her scholar, but then when she wanted to give the book back to Grace and Pat, she saw the clock and decided that, well, it's a fast money making scheme, why not?

She told Grace and Pat her plan and told them she could only do it if they got enough money and bring Bank in. Pat agree and Bank joined them. Lynn told them that she and Bank would fly to Australia since it's 3 hours earlier than Thailand and passed the answer to them. They got ready properly, they even made sure to prepare the answer if they got caught.

That's when Pat slip out that he was the reason Bank was beaten and missed his scholarship exam. Bank was mad, and Lynn was also shocked. She get mad at Pat, but Pat told her that she was the one who wanted Bank to be in their scheme.
Honestly, I don't remember what happened then, they fight and argue, but Bank and Lynn did fly to Australia to take STIC together.

What they did was they tape a phone inside the flush tub. They then answer the questions and memorize the answer. They then send the answer to their friends via group message chat. But in between, Bank decided to be greedy and ask for money before giving them the answers. He was also caught because he drop the phone inside the toilet. But they actually accused him of using the dictionary instead of cheating. Lol.

Thus, for the next part, Lynn had to memorize all her answer by herself and get out of the exam room. She answered everything and faked vomit on the spot to run away while finishing giving the answers. Grace and Pat quickly made barcode on pencils for the answers (what a technology!) and Lynn sent the last questions to them.

Unfortunately, she got caught while being chased by the examiner. Their results was revoked, and Lynn flew back to Thailand, feeling defeated. Grace and Pat were waiting happily and asking her to take the STIC test again (since she's going to ace it anyways) and go with them to the university. Lynn refused and left. She stated that they won't be able to use her to cheat anymore since university doesn't have multiple choice questions. She seek comfort from her father who thought that she ran away with her boyfriend (Bank - as told by Grace and Pat).

At the end, Bank contact her so she went to see him. He offered her to do another scheme with him or else he would report them and cancel their results altogether. Lynn asked if Bank didn't received enough money and asked him to take her part as well. Bank refused and firmly stated that he's going to report them. Thus Lynn decided to report herself instead with the support form his father after telling him everything.

The story ended with Lynn interviewed to be a teacher and was asked about what she'd do if she found her students cheating. Haha. The end.

So what I like about this story is that it is very refreshing. Back in my school years, you know teachers cut only the answer on the answer sheet, right? So they do double answers. Back when I was a teacher, they cheat very openly and foolishly that well, even when they cheat, the answer is wrong. I wonder why do they waste those energy?

What I've learned from this story is:
1) Parents should support their child, understand them and let them learn their life lesson themselves as they grew up like Lynn's father.
2) Cheating won't bring you anywhere.
3) Riches can pay for everything, so why bother?

Anyways, I do have a few unanswered questions about this story.
1) Why do the need scribble paper, and why they heck did they check those? Like, do teachers there only teach and mark papers? I don't even have time to check if my students copy everything from the whiteboard. Lol.
2) How on earth did the teachers miss the piano code? It was so obvious! Hadoilaaaa.
3) Why do Pat's parents insist him to go to a prestigious university? he lived to party, a degree is enough for him. And he can always pay someone to do his assignment. Why bother?

But hey, it's all fiction, to make a story flows, so no complaining! All in all, I enjoyed it and I can re-watched it a lot of times, honestly. The thrill, the scheme and the strategy was fun to watch.
